More than half of US respondents included in a survey conducted through the MultiPolls app said they sleep less than seven hours per day on average. The survey was conducted by research agency Bohemian Research and included 504 respondents.
Six hours was the most common answer
Seven hours of sleep were reported by 16.1% of respondents. Exactly eight hours were reported by 19.8%, nine hours by 5.6%, and more than ten hours by 6.2%. On the shorter end, 22.8% of respondents reported sleeping less than five hours, while 29.6% reported six hours.
Overall, seven or more hours of sleep were reported by 47.6% of respondents, while 52.4% of respondents in the survey reported sleeping less than seven hours per day.
Women reported shorter sleep more often than men
The survey also showed differences between men and women. Less than seven hours of sleep were reported by 55.2% of women, compared with 49.3% of men. The median was six hours for women and seven hours for men.
The approximate average sleep duration was 6.6 hours for women and 6.7 hours for men. The difference in the average was therefore not large, but women in the data more often fell into the group of respondents who reported shorter sleep.
Younger respondents more often reported longer sleep
Differences were also visible between age groups. Among respondents aged 18 to 29, 40.0% reported less than seven hours of sleep. In the 45 to 59 age group, the share was 63.4%, and among respondents aged 60 and over it was 58.6%.
The youngest respondents in this survey were therefore more likely to report seven or more hours of sleep than older age groups. Among respondents over 45, the share of those reporting less than seven hours of sleep was higher.

Methodology
The survey was conducted on April 22, 2026 through the MultiPolls app by research agency Bohemian Research. The analysis included 504 complete responses from respondents in the United States. Respondents answered the question of how many hours they sleep on average. Results are presented for respondents included in the survey and were not further weighted. For the approximate average calculation, the edge categories “less than 5 hours” and “more than 10 hours” were assigned indicative values.
